I wanted to do a quick follow up on last weeks Fitters Corner. I mentioned that I always start with the same Iron model unless there are some different circumstances. This created some stir and some responses. The most common response was “I know my members that I’m fitting, while you don’t know the people you are fitting.” That is a true statement. This could be your biggest hurdle. Unless you are teaching players with face tape on, or looking at impact data throughout a lesson, you don’t “really” know your member. Start from scratch. The pre-fit interview is a must!! Even if you know the player. You might be surprised at his answers. Impact that is not a center strike can create havoc on the players ball flight. If you don’t know what is happening, you can’t have a good starting point.
Part of a fitting is finding what works best for a player. Your knowledge of a player is a definite plus. Use this to your advantage, but don’t pigeon hole yourself into one head style and not explore other options. You never know…
Someone else said “How many good swings does a player have? 30??” I said “yes, about.” “How am I supposed to give him 6 heads and 4 shafts to try in that few swings?” Simple. Three swings per combination is 10 options. That’s a lot. 4 heads by 3 swings each is 12 swings. 5 different shafts by 3 swings each is 15 more swings. That’s 27 total. That is a lot of combinations. You shouldn’t need more than three swings in any one thing. A couple of cautions. First, don’t have a pile of balls there in front of the player. He will hit more than you want if you don’t control the flow. Next, don’t change the head and the shaft at the same time. You won’t be able to tell which variable is making the difference. One change at a time.
Use what you know as an advantage, but don’t start in the middle. Every player walks through the same process!!
Up next – Pre Fit interview. Send me your best questions. I’ll add them and talk about them.
Happy Fitting!!
