The Fitter’s Corner – How has the Internet “Educated” the Consumer?

Let’s take a quick break from the nut’s and bolts. There are two things to bring up today.

First, Callaway recently reclaimed it position as the #1 Iron in golf. This is a marker that we covet. Being #1 is more than just a number. A couple of other notes:

  • We’ve shipped over 90% of ALL Custom Fit orders in lass than 2 days
  • From Big Bertha Reva to Apex, no one has a more comprehensive lineup
  • No Upcharge shafts and grips are optimized for out line up.
  • #1 Iron in wins on the PGA Tour in 2023

What’s the takeaway? Not only can you fit the #1 Irons in golf, but you can DELIVER the #1 irons in golf to your customer.

Second, Consumers are more educated than ever before. They take lessons on YouTube. They become quasi equipment junkies. They might think they know more than you. The internet is full of opinions – some good, some bad. None of what’s on there makes up for your experience. This experience still keeps you in control of the fitting, but you may need to re-strategize how you approach it.

Consider this… We had an event over the weekend where a player was interviewed prior to hitting any shots. We measured his performance with his club, fit him and we got him dialed in. Admittedly, his miss was a slice. Paradym X, D setting, etc… At the end, the player says “I want the Triple Diamond”. Talk about opposite of what he needs!! It wasn’t even in the mix – Until that moment. We had to restart the process and show him why this was not a good fit for him. This event led us to re-evaluate what we discuss in the Pre-Fit interview.

Perhaps asking “What do you know about the Callaway Line?”, or “Is there anything specific you’d like to try today?” should be a part of this discussion. You can address these things during the fitting and not backpedal at the end. This caused us to change what we ask. It makes sense if you think about it. If you work with multiple brands when you fit, it’s even more important. If a player wants to try a certain brand, we need to be aware of what that is UP FRONT so we can get it in the mix early. If it’s a bad fit for the player, we can also eliminate it early. The end result is a more complete fit for the player from the players point of view. It will stop you from having to re-open a fitting that you know is done (and done right) in order to eliminate doubt on the players side. The extra steps you take in the beginning WILL inspire more confidence at the conclusion.

I hope this helps!! Happy Fitting.
