The Product Place – AI One Recap

Since it’s Odyssey promo week, and we’ve talked about Square to Square, let’s do a quick recap on Ai One and what makes them so special.

We haven’t lost a putter count (number of putters in play) on a major tour in 2024, which also means we haven’t lost a putter count since AI One launched last November. This means that clearly PGA Tour players get the story. The amazing part of that story is how many we don’t pay – they forego endorsement deals with other manufacturers to play something that will help them win. Not much makes me smile like seeing a player with a Titleist cap on and a putter with a red shaft and a white face in his hands. Just sayin…

AI One was born from the concept of preventing three putts. Our design team felt that players three putt due to poor distance control. The poor distance control was often the result of a mis-hit putt that didn’t go as far as the player anticipated – thus leaving the player a 6-footer to save par. The relationship between the length of the stroke and the likelihood of three-putting was uncovered. Hmmmm. How can we fix this?? We use AI to create the same ball speeds on hits all across the faces of our full swing clubs, why not with a putter??

AI One uses a machine milled piece of aluminum set over a hollow cavity in the face of the putter. The White Hot face sits inside the piece of aluminum. The piece of aluminum has variable face thickness that is optimized by AI that is designed to give the same (or very similar) ball speeds on a ball struck anywhere across the putter face. Brilliant is an understatement. The idea is to leave that mis-hit putt inside of three feet, as opposed to outside of 6 feet. THAT… will improve scores and increase the enjoyment of the game.

By the numbers

The average Tour player is close to 99% from 3 feet and in. Take this with some context – 3 feet and in is ALL putts inside of 3 feet – not just three-footers. From 6 feet (not 6 feet and in), the Tour average is about 70%. From 10 feet it’s about 50%. TV tells a story that is not reality. TV only shows the guys who make putts – the 40-foot bomb? That’s about a 3% make. Why show the best players in the world missing putts? I can go to any Muni and see that. The question is this… If Tour players are 99% from three-feet and in, and you’re not a tour player – what are you from inside that circle?? Many players are 100% because they never putt those. 😉 If a Tour player misses 3 out of 10 from 6 feet on perfect greens with a green reading book, and a caddy to help him with the read, what are you? 50%? 40%?? The point is the ball needs to finish closer to the hole AFTER the first putt to have a better chance to NOT three-putt. That’s how AI One will help EVERY player putt better.

Players spend $600 on a driver all the time. Why not spend half that on a club you use twice as much??

Talking about the numbers, I’ll leave you with a stat that will blow your mind. From 2002-2005, Tiger had 1,540 putts inside of 3 feet. He made 1,536 of them. Ponder that…
